Since ancient times people have known about the warm springs on the common pasture of the Laško borough. Among the reeds and marsh grass, the snow always melted first, and washerwomen brought their laundry in the worst winter conditions across the frozen Savinja River and scooped warm water from deepened troughs.
The invigorating and healing qualities of the thermal water were known to Roman legionnaires, missionaries came to them in the Middle Ages, and by the end of the 19th century, the cosmopolitan health resort of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Francis Joseph I had developed beside the Savinja.
Everyone came in search of health.

Today the Laško Thermal Spa Resort is a modern health tourism centre with programs and services for health and well-being. Its hotel complex lays in the centre of a park beside the Savinja just a fifteen-minute stroll from the centre of the city. The city of Laško, after which the spa is named, is located at the very heart of Slovenia and is therefore an ideal starting point for excursions throughout the country.

In 2006, construction will begin on a new wellness hotel, a thermal centre, and a congress centre. The four-star hotel will offer 220 rooms with around 400 beds, a restaurant, and a café. Under a glass cupola, the thermal centre will have a wave pool, a children’s pool, a pool with various water attractions, and a connection to an all-season outdoor pool. Outside, the swimming complex will have an outdoor recreation pool with water slides and other attractions, and at the confluence of the Savinja and Rečica rivers there will be an attractive pool in the shape of a water crystal that will offer guests coexistence with nature in the embrace of water. With 2,200 m² of water surfaces, the entire pool offer will use healing thermal water of 30º C to 34º C.
The thermal centre will include a sauna centre covering 700 m² with thermal pools, a terrace, and a wellness centre occupying 900 m² where all the most popular services for body and soul will be available.
